What changed in August 2026
- Buy Goods: merchants pay nothing on collections up to KSh 500 (it was KSh 200), from 7 August.
- Pochi la Biashara: free for the customer up to KSh 200 and never more than KSh 50, from 1 August to 31 October 2026.
- Moving money out of a Business Till: to a phone or a PayBill, about half what it cost before, from 7 August.
Questions sellers ask
How much does M-Pesa charge to send money in 2026?
Sending to a registered M-Pesa number is free up to KSh 100, then KSh 7 up to 500, KSh 13 up to 1,000, rising to a maximum of KSh 108 for amounts above KSh 20,000. The table has not changed since July 2023.
Who pays the charge on Lipa na M-Pesa Buy Goods?
The business. Paying a Buy Goods till is free for the customer. Since 7 August 2026 the merchant pays nothing on collections up to KSh 500, then 0.55% of the amount, never more than KSh 200.
What does Pochi la Biashara cost?
The customer pays. From 1 August to 31 October 2026 Safaricom cut Pochi payments to free up to KSh 200 and a maximum of KSh 50. After that, Pochi payments are charged at the normal send-money rates unless Safaricom extends the offer.
Which is cheapest for a small shop: till, Pochi or PayBill?
A Buy Goods till is free for your customer, and since August 2026 free for you too on sales up to KSh 500; above that you pay 0.55%, capped at KSh 200. Pochi costs you nothing to receive, but your customer pays a fee above KSh 200. On everyday small sales, a till is now the cheapest for both sides.
