A Lipa na M-PESA Buy Goods till gives your business its own number that customers pay for free. Since August 2026 it is also free for you on sales up to KSh 500. Here is how to get one.
Apply online
Safaricom takes applications on its M-PESA for Business self-onboarding portal, at m-pesaforbusiness.co.ke:
- Choose Apply now and pick the product — the Buy Goods till.
- Choose your business structure: individual, sole proprietor or limited company.
- Fill in the form, upload your documents, and submit.
Upload clear colour scans or PDFs with no cut-off edges — unreadable documents are a common reason applications bounce.
The documents
What Safaricom asks for depends on how your business is set up. Typically:
| Business | Documents |
|---|---|
| Sole proprietor (registered business name) | Owner’s ID, owner’s KRA PIN, business name registration certificate (BN) |
| Limited company | Certificate of incorporation, company KRA PIN, recent CR12 showing directors, directors’ IDs and KRA PINs, board resolution |
| All | Signed M-PESA terms, a Safaricom line to manage the till, and for a till, a business permit and bank details |
Requirements change from time to time — the portal lists the current set for your business type before you submit.
Not registered yet?
If you do not have a registered business, Pochi la Biashara gives you a business wallet on your own M-PESA line with no paperwork. Your customers pay a send-money-style fee instead. Compare the two in till vs Pochi vs PayBill.
What a till costs to use
Paying a till is free for your customer. Since 7 August 2026 you pay nothing on collections up to KSh 500, then 0.55%, capped at KSh 200. Check any amount with the M-Pesa charges calculator.
